When finishing your hives with our all-natural tung oil, it’s beneficial to thin the oil that is used for the first coat so that it will penetrate the wood more deeply. Subsequent coats of tung oil can and should be applied without thinning. What is most commonly used to dilute tung oil is mineral spirits, which is a petroleum-based solvent. Citrus solvent is a more natural alternative to mineral spirits. Simply mix some tung oil with an equal amount of citrus solvent and apply a liberal first coat.
