These handy and inexpensive little beetle traps were designed to be 2/3 filled with food grade mineral oil and then disposed of when full of SHB. Our friend John Seaborn of Wolfcreek Apiaries has found that they can instead be 1/3 filled with hydrated lime (which he says kills more beetles), emptied out right on the ground in the apiary after catching a lot of beetles, and then refilled and reused. Simply place the traps between the outermost  frames or top bars of the top hive body and install a 1/2" shim under the quilt. The bees chase the beetles into the traps where they quickly die.
